Abstract:

Three dimensional equilibrium and breaking of magnetic surfaces due to the finite beta effect in a 1=2 heliotron/torsatron configuration are studied by using a newly developed three-dimensional equilibrium code. The breaking is significantly suppressed as gamma_ c (pitch parameter) becomes smaller. An inward shift of the plasma by using the vertical field and elliptic (vertical) shaping using the quadrupole field can also suppress the breaking.
