The present lecture surveys various soliton phenomena, after giving the mathematical foundation to define solitons. Laboratory devices for the studies of plasma soliton phenomena are described together with experimental results. The most interesting application of soliton physics is illustrated in the discussion of soliton propagation in optical fibers. Topics on chaotic behavior in nonlinear dynamical systems will be discussed briefly in concluding remarks.
