Abstract:

Basic properties of the impulsive Alfven interaction between the magnetosphere and ionosphere have been studied by means of a three-demensional self-consistent simulation of the coupled magnetosphere and ionosphere system. It is found that the duration time of an impulsive perturbation at the magnetospheric equator, the latitudinal distribution of the Alfven propagation time along the field lines, and the ratio between the magnetospheric impedance and the ionospheric responses for an impulsive MHD perturbation in the magnetosphere.
