Abstract:

An asymmetric plasma divided by the magnetic filter (MF) is numerically simulated by the one-dimensional particle-in-cell code VSIM1D. Depending on the asymmetry, the system behaves static or dynamic. In the static state the potentials of the main plasma and the subplasma are given by the sheath potentials phi_M ~ 3T_Me/e and phi_s - 3T_Se/e, respectively, with e being an electron charge and T_Me and T_Se being electron temperatures (T_Me > T_Se). In the dynamic state, while phi_M ~3T_Me/e. phi_S oscillates periodically between phi_S, min ~ 3T_Se/e and phi_S,max ~ 3T_Me/e. The ions accelerated by the time varying potential gap get into the subplasma and excite the laminar shock waves. This periodic phenomenon can be understood as a limit cycle due to transitions between two bifurcated states of phi_S,min and phi_S,max.
