Vortical Structure of Turbulence

Abstract:

The vortical structure of isotropic turbulence is analyzed by the use of the low-pressure-vortex visualization method. It is found that every swirling vortex tube is accompanied with winding vortex layers around it. The vorticity in these layers is perpendicular to the vortex tube. The Reynolds number dipendence of the contribution of the vortex tubes to various physical quantities is investigated.
