CompleXcope - a virtual reality system -

Our virtual reality system, CompleXcope, has Graphic workstation (SGI Onyx2: 8 CPUs of MIPS R12000, 4 graphic pipelines and 2GByte memory) controlling the virtual objects, 4 screens and stereo projectors, stereo shutter glasses, Wand TM Portable controller for interacting with virtual objects, and 3D-stereo sound system. The system is linked with the SX-4 supercomputer system, where large-scale simulations are carried out.

Virtual reality network project

The virtual reality system has been used so far as a stand-alone system. Therefore, it was not designed for those simulation researchers, who are geographically distant, to own jointly the same VR image in each site. We are now constructing a communication network system of the virtual reality systems, where a researcher on any sites can control the connected virtual reality systems and own jointly the same VR image. We are also developing a system where the virtual images of researchers (avatars) are transmitted from one virtual space to others, and vice versa. This research project is under progress by the support of TAO (Telecommunications Advanced Organization).

VFIVE
Vector Field Interactive Visualization Environment

As a pioneering group in "scientific virtual reality visualization", we must develop by ourselves basic software tools, user interfaces, etc. of the VR environment optimized for a scientific research purpose. Combining them, we have developed a VR application program for the general-purpose use, named "VFIVE". By using VFIVE, researchers can interactively analyze various kinds of simulation data in VR space without making bothersome graphic programs.
