Research Activity

For the purpose of investigating complex behaviors of a hundred million degree plasmas in fusion reactors, several different theoretical models consisting of a variety of equations are used, and super-computer simulations are performed intensively. Stability of magnetically-confined plasmas is studied based on magnetohydrodynamics that describes a plasma as an electromagnetic fluid. Plasma transport processes are studied by kinetic models that treat collective motions of a huge number of ions and electrons in a plasma. Various theories and simulations combining fluid and kinetic models are in progress for researches on diverse phenomena occurring in fusion plasmas such as turbulent electromagnetic fluctuations, instabilities driven by high-energy particles, radiation from impurities, ablation of hydrogen pellets, etc.
