About Special inter-institutional research fellow program

National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) has developed research activities as an inter-university research institute, and has accepted students through Special inter-institutional research fellow program as part of graduate education. This program is for graduate students in Japan and abroad. Graduate schools where the graduate students belonged to entrust research guidance for graduate students in specific research task to NIFS for a period of time. This program assumes that unit recognitions, thesis examinations, conferment of degree, etc. are conducted at your graduate school.

Graduate student who wishes to have research guidance in fusion research or extensive interdisciplinary research which related to the fusion science need an endorsement from a dean at the graduate school which the graduate student belongs, then the graduate student can be an inter-institutional research fellow by permission of Director-General of NIFS.

Special inter-institutional research fellow will receive advices by a tutor in units of Department of Research in response to each specific research task, use equipment at NIFS, and carry out the research with receiving facilities for research.

We expect that NIFS will be familiar to graduate students all over Japan as an inter-university research institute, and that the graduate students use the research and education functions through this program.

Before applying for the program, please refer to this guideline of acceptance, and contact your desired future tutor at NIFS. Then, please apply for the program.

Guideline of accepting Inter-Institutional Research Fellow in FY2024

  1. Number of accepting students
    Number of accepting students is less than 30, in principle.
  2. Accepting Research Units
    Accepting research Units are the following below.
    Please refer to “Research topics / guidance items of research” for the research contents in each research units.

  3. Acceptance target
    Students (including students who will graduate in April, 2024) who belong to a graduate school in Japan or aboard, and their major should be Fusion Science or other subject regarding Fusion Science.
  4. Acceptance Term
    Within a year of from April 2024 to March 2025 in principle. Acceptance month is April and October.
    However, if it is deemed necessary, extension of acceptance term may be allowed through prescribed procedure.
    Acceptance term for Master’s Program cannot be longer than 1 year.
  5. Document Submitted
    Following documents should be submitted after an applicant and your desired future tutor at NIFS have enough conversations in advance.

  1. Period for submission of the application documents
    For April:February 13, Tuesday, 2024 - February 26, Monday
    For October:August 5, Monday, 2024 - August 16, Friday
  2. Screening/notification
    The submitted documents are screened at NIFS, and the result is notified the applicant and a director of
    research division at your graduate school.
  3. Examination fee, entrance fee, and school fee
    Examination fee, entrance fee, and school fee are not collected.
  4. Completion of research guidance
    Submit a research report to the director general of NIFS when you complete the research guidance. Certificate of research guidance is granted to a person who received a prescribed research guidance.
  5. Disaster and accident insurance for student education and research
    The system of Disaster and accident insurance for student education and research by Japan EducationalExchanges and Services (JEES) will cover damages caused by disasters etc. which occurred at NIFS. If you do not have the insurance, you must join the insurance at your university in advance.
  6. Inventions, etc.
    If you make inventions through a research at NIFS, the ownership of rights shall be gone through a prescribed procedure as provided by National Institutes of Natural Sciences.
  7. Others
    In addition, if necessary, NIFS may require graduate students fron other universities to attend training
    programs for radiation safety before entering areas where radiation is used or has been used.
    Further, graduate students may required to attend research ethics education (APRIN), compliance education on the prevention of unauthorized use of competitive funds, information security training, etc.
    It is desirable to attend the safety education programs at your university before enrolling in NIFS.

Before you post, please confirm the following items. Please understand if your submitted document is different form or, if we cannot confirm duration of your insurance, we may not accept your submitted documents.

  • Regarding “Form 4”, if the duration of your insurance covers your acceptance term, or not.
  • If you do not join insurance, attach an indication of insurance contents which is under the procedure.
