Efforts to Promote Gender Equality at NIFS

Initiatives Concerning Personnel Selection

  • Women and foreign researchers are employed when they are recognized as equal in terms of research and educational achievements and personality evaluation.
  • Researchers can take maternity leave before or after childbirth, child-care leave, or family care leave. Also, researches can take partial leave for child-care and/or family care. Taking into  consideration such leave, NIFS will evaluate the researchers during the period subject to the performance evaluation.

Childcare Support System and Employment Support System

  • During Maternity leave (6 weeks before the expected birthday and 8 weeks after the next day of birth) salaries are paid.
  • You can take childcare leave until the child turns 3 years old. Basic allowance of childcare leave benefits is paid until the child turns 1 year old.
  • The term of the contract for Research-Education Employees may be extended, upon request, by the same amount as their period of maternity, childcare and/or family care leave.
  • A part of the childcare expenses arising from temporary daycare (external nursery, babysitters, etc.) or daycare of sick children or recovering children will be supported. In addition to support from the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS), NIFS provides its own support. For more information, please click here.
  • The Academic Assistant System is institutionalized to hire Research Support Staff. This System is designed to support researchers under tight time constraints on their working hours due to having children up to sixth grade elementary school students or family members requiring special care.
  • If you accompany your child on business trips, a transportation assistance program is available. Please click here for details.
  • We introduced a telework system to enable telecommuting, to support balancing work and family life including childcare, to continue and promote research activities, to increase the number of woman researchers and to promote Gender Equality.
  • We have a childcare leave system for men when the child is born, and a childcare leave and partial childcare leave system that can be taken by both women and men.
